What are the differences between Solid Soap and Liquid Soap?

When you are wondering which soap to use for taking a shower or for cleaning, you must first discover the difference between the two main categories of soap: solid soap and liquid soap.

Solid Soap is made from a very strong alkaline agent which is sodium hydroxide, also called caustic soda. It is mixed with a fatty substance which can be animal fats or vegetable oils. Often, manufacturers add perfume to obtain honey soap, milk soap or even scented Marseille soap. Each type of soap has particular virtues.

Liquid Soap, on the contrary, is made with an alkaline agent with a rather low pH. We use caustic potash or potassium hydroxide which keeps the soap soft. Black soap is, for example, obtained from this caustic potash.

If cold or hot saponification can be used to make Solid Soap, Liquid Soap can only be obtained from hot saponification in a cauldron. In practice, we mix 10 to 15% soft soap with 85 to 90% water to obtain a liquid texture. The cooking time is very long to obtain perfect saponification.

Each type of soap has its advantages and disadvantages. In any case, whether you choose Solid Soap or Liquid Soap, there can be natural, organic or chemical products. Regardless, Solid Soaps are more economical for cosmetics and more powerful for laundry. In fact, 100 g of Solid Soap is equivalent to 250 ml of shower gel or other Liquid Soap.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a multi-use cleaner to clean your work surface, your kitchen utensils, your sink, etc., the liquid gel is more practical. Also, the Liquid Soap is very gentle when applied to the skin and hair.

How to choose and recognize a good Solid Soap?

Solid Soap is very popular because it contains fewer or almost no chemical substances. Regardless, you should refer to its ingredients before purchasing this or that product. To do this, you can use the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients as a basis.

Always opt for artisanal soaps. They contain a fatty substance which is often vegetable oils such as olive oil or coconut oil. If you choose a superfatted soap, it may contain more than three vegetable oils. Then there is an aqueous body, most often water, to dissolve the soda and a moisturizing agent like glycerin.

Always choose the product with the fewest ingredients possible, because it is more ecological and contains zero waste during manufacturing and use. Real artisanal soap always has a pale green or brown complexion like Marseille soap, donkey milk soap and Aleppo soap which you will find at Plantes & Parfums.

Avoid at all costs soaps containing palm oil, fats of animal origin from beef or pork often called sodium lardate, preservatives and perfumes.

How to choose and use Liquid Soap?

Liquid Soap has the advantage of being very practical to use. For the body, face and hair, simply wet the area to be cleaned and apply a very small amount of Liquid Soap before rubbing lightly. Afterwards, simply rinse well. Whether for the body or for the home, there is already a very precise mention for the use: Liquid hand soap, hair shampoo, dishwashing liquid, Laundry soap, Household soap for household appliances, etc. .

Particularly for cosmetic products, you need to pay attention to your skin and hair type. There are shampoos for normal hair, dry hair, oily hair, broken hair, dull hair, flat hair, colored hair and dandruff hair. The same goes for skin types which are often categorized by: dry skin, normal skin, combination skin, oily skin and sensitive skin. Then there is problem skin like acne-prone skin.

Thus, your Liquid Soap can provide a very specific result for your skin, for example an anti-wrinkle product that fights against skin aging or a complexion revealing product to illuminate the radiance of the face.
